Multi-Stop HGV Route Planning — A Guide for Fleets and Owner-Drivers
Planning a single HGV route is hard enough. Planning ten drops in one shift, around low bridges, weight limits, LEZ zones and driver-hours rules, is where a real multi route planner stops looking like a luxury and starts looking like the cheapest insurance you can buy.
Why generic route planning software falls over
Google Maps, Apple Maps and most consumer "multi route planner" apps are built around cars. They optimise for the shortest car route between points and quietly ignore everything that makes HGV planning different: vehicle height, width, weight, axle load, ADR / hazmat restrictions, urban access windows, and the legally required breaks built into a driver's day.
For one-off light vehicles this is fine. For a 44-tonne artic doing nine drops, it's how you end up reversing out of a village high street or paying a £600 ULEZ charge that wiped out the day's margin.

- Vehicle profile applied to every leg. Height, width, length, weight, axle weight and load class are checked segment-by-segment, not just at the start and end.
- Stop optimisation that respects time windows. Sites with delivery slots (RDCs, construction sites, schools) need to be visited in a legal order, not just the geographically shortest one.
- Driver-hours awareness. Daily driving limits, 45-minute breaks after 4.5 hours, and end-of-shift parking need to be modelled into the route, not bolted on afterwards.
- Low-emission zones and city access. LEZ, ULEZ, CAZ and European equivalents need to be priced in or routed around based on the vehicle's emissions class.
- Live conditions. Closures, weight-limit changes, weighbridge queues and community reports of blocked routes need to be reflected in real time, not pulled from a six-month-old map tile.
A practical workflow for planning a multi-drop day
- Build the vehicle profile once — height, width, weight, axles, ADR class, emissions standard — and save it per vehicle.
- Drop all stops into the planner with their time windows and any site-specific notes (height of dock, reversing direction).
- Let the planner optimise stop order against the vehicle profile, not just distance. The shortest sequence is rarely the legal or fastest one.
- Review the suggested order with the driver. Drivers often know which industrial estates are nightmare reverses or which roundabouts an artic can't physically take.
- Schedule the 45-minute break at a known HGV-suitable stop, not wherever the timer happens to fire.
- Share the finalised route to the driver's phone or in-cab unit, with turn-by-turn that respects the same vehicle profile.

First, re-routes mid-shift drop sharply — the route the driver started with is the route they finish, because the bridges, lanes and weight limits were checked before the wheels turned.
